A Life Coach and a Licensed Counselor or Therapist are both valuable resources to help someone ready to invest in their personal growth and well-being. Knowing the difference is essential to ensure that you receive the right support for your unique needs. It's not that one is better than the other; it's simply about finding what will work for your specific needs. Simply put - Therapy helps you heal and process emotional challenges, while coaching focuses on setting goals and moving forward.
A licensed professional will help you focus on healing from past traumas, address and help you manage mental health disorders like depression or anxiety, and may prescribe medication if they feel it is necessary and helpful. Therapy is considered a healthcare service that can be covered by insurance policies and is focused on improving overall mental health and addressing psychological disorders.
Coaching is a strength-based, goal-oriented process designed to help individuals improve their emotional well-being, develop effective coping strategies, and achieve personal and professional goals as determined by the client. It focuses on the future while helping you take steps on your healing and growth journey. While coaching may address mental health challenges, it is not therapy, counseling, or medical treatment, and the coach does not diagnose or treat mental illnesses. Instead, coaching focuses on empowering individuals to take control of their lives by improving their mindset, building resilience, and cultivating sustainable habits for a healthier, happier life.
A Licensed Counselor or Therapist will focus on the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of mental and personality disorders. The primary goal is to address mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and other emotional or psychological concerns, with the intent to help individuals understand and overcome these issues and improve their overall well-being by changing dysfunctional behavior and developing new strategies for successfully coping with the psychological challenges of life.
Life Coaching is a deeply personal journey focused on supporting you as you strive to achieve your self-identified goals. It's like having a personal trainer for each domain of your life. Through methods such as personal strategic planning, clarifying your values, and engaging in brainstorming sessions, we can explore what truly matters to you. Motivational counseling and other supportive techniques are also employed to help you navigate any challenges or imbalances you may be feeling in your personal life or career. This process is all about you and your growth, and a coach is committed to walking alongside you every step of the way.
As you can see, they are similar in that they involve the study of human behavior, motivation, and behavioral changes; they differ in their objectives, focus, and the qualifications of the professionals involved. There are circumstances, however, when it is highly effective and maybe necessary to use both simultaneously. Counseling helps you heal, Coaching helps you grow.

You may need a Licensed Counselor if:
You experience persistent feelings of anxiety or stress
Overwhelming, consistent feelings of sadness or depression
Difficulty navigating relationships
Regular Coping mechanisms no longer working
Struggling with Alcohol or substance misuse
A Life Coach could help if:
You are transitioning out of therapy and need some continued support
Support with goal setting and accountability
Guidance for personal growth, self-awareness, and relationships
Assistance in discovering and changing limiting beliefs and mindset
Help to gain greater clarity around your purpose and passions
