Understanding Attachment Styles

People generally have one of two primary attachment styles: secure or insecure. The insecure category is further divided into three different styles. Attachment theory, simply put, explains that these patterns of behavior develop in childhood as a way to protect oneself from pain and to maintain a connection with caregivers who are expected to provide safety and support. Approximately 40% of the population falls into the insecure attachment category. The coping mechanisms they develop in relationships can become problematic in adulthood, leading to relational disconnect. Understanding attachment is essential for human flourishing.  It’s not just information, but a roadmap for transformation. Change can only begin with awareness, and awareness takes time to develop.

The good news is that attachment styles can change. This knowledge brings hope. My goal is to raise self-awareness—not just to label you—but to help you understand why you react in certain situations and what triggers responses that may hinder your relationships and personal growth.

When we understand our attachment style, we can respond with compassion instead of judgment or frustration, allowing us to cultivate more secure and loving relationships. This understanding will also enhance our parenting skills, ensuring that our own children develop secure attachments. Additionally, it will help us better relate to our spouses, connect with them on a more intimate level, and communicate our needs more clearly while responding to theirs with greater compassion.
